A Guide for Allergy Sufferers
Don’t let your allergies get the best of you.
Allergy season has hit north Texas with full force, bringing blooming trees and pollen-filled air that can spell trouble for many. Sneezing, runny noses, itchy/watery eyes, and nasal congestion are just some of the symptoms that plague allergy sufferers during this time. As a board-certified ear, nose, and throat doctor, I've experienced the impact of allergies firsthand and want to offer some survival tips.
Nasal saline is essential for combating seasonal allergies. Whether through a Neti pot or nasal saline sprays or mist, incorporating this into your daily routine can provide relief. I like Simply Saline nasal mist, because it is easy to use. Just a couple of sprays to each side of my nose and I’m on my way! This natural remedy is safe for all ages and can be used as often as needed.
Over-the-counter medications like nasal steroid sprays (e.g., fluticasone) work well and should be used consistently for maximum benefit. Oral antihistamines (e.g., loratadine, cetirizine) and nasal antihistamine sprays (e.g., azelastine) are also effective and offer quick relief. If these medications aren't working, it may be time to consult your doctor and consider possible allergy immunotherapy. Allergy immunotherapy can be given either by shots or by drops under the tongue. Both methods deliver a small amount of the allergen you are allergic to and over time your body will develop tolerance, which leads to a significant reduction in symptoms.
Maintaining an anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables and minimizing or eliminating processed foods and animal products, which can be pro-inflammatory, can make a significant difference. I have seen this in my own life, and it is amazing what a difference changes in diet can make!
Remember, with the right strategies in place, you can survive allergy season and enjoy the blooming beauty of spring in north Texas!
